When I first started going to school at SLCC back in the Fall of 2012, I was focusing on becoming an Interpreter of the Deaf. I wanted to study American Sign Language (ASL) because I wanted to be able to communicate with the deaf and make sure that they were getting all the information they needed to be getting in conversations between the deaf and hearing worlds. I had decided before even starting college that I was going to pay for it all out of pocket. I didn't want to take out student loans or depend on anyone else to help me pay my way through my schooling, and it worked perfectly! At least for a while...
I attended for two years straight, but then I had to take a year break due to financial reasons and when I was finally able to come back, my signing skills had taken a big hit and they weren't as good as they should have been. I also started realizing my hands and wrists weren't feeling as good as they used to, and after getting my wrists checked, come to find out, I have the beginnings of Carpel Tunnel. . . So now I am just going to finish with my General Education and get my Associates and then we will see if I get back into sign language, but for now it seems my original goal of becoming an Interpreter has hit a barrier and depending on where life decides to take me will decide if  I get back into ASL, but I still want to be able to communicate with the deaf community, because I really love the language and want to be able to communicate with the deaf, I just wont be becoming an interpreter any time soon.
